I could say a lot about it. I was not keen on the update, which cut a lot of the humor and several verses of songs. I could say it was the gayest thing I've ever seen and I do drag. When local queen Imagene Azengraber is not the gayest thing in the production, we are talking gaaaaaaaaaaaay. Technically, it was glorious. The Leading Player was perfection. The rest of the cast was pretty good. Pippin blew out his voice by the end of Act 1.

Anyway, that's not what I'm thinking about.

Gabriel did not quite get the musical. And he did not like what he did get. And he asked me why I was so fond of a musical that was not only anti-pagan (Charlemagne campaigning against the non-Christian tribes around him) but gave the message that the only way to be happy is to settle. But even if you settle, your kids will still be seduced by their own dreams of glory. (New ending, and one I wasn't a fan of)

It took some thought.

Pippin was the right musical at the right time. Just as Gabriel had Ender's Game, which I hated (a horrible book about abusive adults training child soldiers), I had Pippin. I was a gifted child. I was trapped in an abusive home life. I wanted magic and miracles. I had done both (magic kit and chem set) and wanted more.

And at 17, with the highest ACT scores ever seen by our school counselor, my college apps already in, and life at home growing more intolerable by the day, I needed my corner of the sky so badly. "Extraordinary"--which, last night, had lost all context around it, and was presented as whiny--was my rage anthem. I was going to go out and do great things. I just had to get out of Peculiar and out of my mom's house.

Once I did, I ended up as rudderless as Pippin. He tries everything: war, being king, sins of the flesh, politics, art, religion, everything. He is waiting for the truly satisfying thing to drop in his lap.

I was undiagnosed ADHD. I fought my way through college, got a degree I am still embarrassed by, and then tried the life of a religious devotee, called to making babies for God. Eventually, I tried every bad job in Rolla, Little Rock and Memphis, trying to even find the right track. I've slung coins in a casino, worked cash registers, and was generally directionless until I got my CDL. Professional driving is the only thing I've ever stuck with. That and writing.

Now? Now the kids are grown. I'm back to the life of a religious devotee with my head covered and my hair uncut. I drive a bus. I write and craft and am active with my extended family and my church. I never did do anything great and amazing. Have I settled? Maybe. But I chose to follow other dreams when the first ones were blocked for various reasons (calculus).

So, 37 years on, where am I?

Trapped. But happy. Which isn't too bad for the end of a musical comedy.
ta-da

NickRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02373234360361399832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462173375599864041.post-62186301001566674532022-03-18T18:56:00.004-07:002022-03-18T18:56:51.805-07:00Manuscript revision
So you have a shiny new draft! Excellent. You did very well. Now put it in a drawer and leave it alone for at least 2 weeks.

(Two weeks later)

All right, is it ready for prime time? No, probably not. I can help you with some of the technical stuff

Read your manuscript. Out loud. Listen for awkward sentences, repeated words and other things that need fixing.

Second read through:

1) Is this person starting or preparing to do something? Why aren't they just doing it?

2) In scenes with 2 people of the same sex, make sure we know who is talking. Pronoun confusion is real.

3) Check your punctuation. Especially in dialogue.

Correct: “Let's go,” he said.

Incorrect: “Let's go.” He said.

Correct: “Is this right?” she asked

Incorrect: “Is this right,” she asked?

4) Is the adverb necessary? Would a stronger verb suit the sentence?

5) Watch exclamation points. Too many make the reader feel shouted at.

6) Ellipses sound hesitant. A few are fine, but too many make a character indecisive and annoying.

7) Fear of said. Said is a perfectly good dialogue tag. Please do not substitute “enunciated,” “thin-smiled” or “quipped” unless absolutely necessary. Know what your dialogue tags mean.

8) Point of View! If we are in one person's head for all of the scene, keep us there. Do not bounce from person to person.

9) If you are writing an action scene—including a sex scene—do not interrupt it for thoughts. Unless your character is ignoring the action and brooding instead, they should only be focused on the events around them. (Nobody interrupts a firefight for a psychology lesson. Don't interrupt a sex scene for it, either)

10) Watch epithets. The tall man, the short blonde, etc. Names are invisible.

11) Keep your names consistent, especially if you've changed someone's name during writing!

Common bugbears:

Check for these:

A lot, allot and alot. Replace alot with a lot. Allot is a verb

You're (contraction) going to take your (possessive) book home.

They're (contraction) going to take their (possessive) books over there (location).

Two (number) boys are going to (preposition) go, too (also).

It's (contraction) all right, the rain falls in its(possessive) own time.

We can't lose (verb) the goose, even when it gets loose (adjective).

Rein (control, as if with a bridle) in your complaints about it raining (precipitation) on the parade. The Carnival King still reigns (rules over).

Who's (contraction of who is or who has) left this? Whose (possessive) book is it?

Write (verb) down your rites (ritual) so you get them right (correct).

No late papers accepted (taken). No exceptions (exclusions).

Should of, could of. would of. These should be contractions: Should've could've would've

Affect and effect. Most of the time, affect is a verb and effect is a noun. “Let's see if we can affect an effect!” Only in clinical writing is affect a noun.

Then is sequencing. Than is comparison.

Now that you have a manuscript that is technically good, start in on the content edits:

1) Read through your book and take notes. Keep an eye on places you get bored and start skimming.

2) Address the timeline and overall pacing. Easter never comes in MAY! If I had done this step, there wouldn't be dozens of copies of a vampire novel where it did.

3) Round out any flat characters. You created them for a reason. Every character should want something, even if it's just a cup of tea.

4) Fill in gaps in your worldbuilding.

5) Hone your scene-by-scene pacing and dialogue.

6) Copy edit carefully — look out for bad habits! Go back through the list up there.

Always read aloud if you can.

Then comes the fun part of modifying it to house style. If you are submitting somewhere, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do their house style. It tells the editor you can follow directions and will probably take edits well. It also shortens their formatter's work.

NickRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02373234360361399832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462173375599864041.post-78297534587501131622022-03-09T17:29:00.003-08:002022-03-09T17:40:34.613-08:00My Wish Lists
Tamolechas is approaching, an we're drawing names. They want a link to my wishlists

All righty

What do I want and need?

1) My Amazon Wishlist is here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/Y45SMBOQHTFK/

and here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/JJ5EO32KKAUR

2) My Wish Wishlist: https://www.wish.com/profile?uid=5913b86a0a1b0b84acb1a7d5 (NSFW!)

3) My generalized wish list: https://www.pinterest.com/valarltd/shut-up-and-take-my-money/

4) Share a link to your favorite song, or the coolest thing you saw on the net this year.

5) Art! I love art, especially of favorite media characters. I especially love fan art of my characters. Art of Hermes, Hera or the Morrigan would also be welcome.

6) Headcoverings. I am veiling this winter, and it's wonderful. But I have a limited number of options, all flawed. I am not wanting a hijab, but a veil made for veiling, and not a slick nylon scarf would be lovely.

7) A statue of Hermes, Ganesha, Thoth, Hecate or The Morrigan. Hermes has altar representation, but I would like a statue of him. I have Hera. Artwork is also welcome

8) More Patrons! https://www.patreon.com/NickRowan $1/month gets you a lot of goodies.

9) Followers on savings apps. Download the app onto your phone, sign up with the referral code. I get a bonus and you get money for every receipt. Okay, it's only some pennies most of the time, but they mount up.

Swagbucks: https://www.swagbucks.com/profile/AngeliaSparrow

Fetch Rewards: BV9VC

NCP (National Consumer Panel): Referral code 135A92A

Ibotta: referral code mcpiwnp

Coin Out: https://coinout.com/referrals/new?r=VMAXGHA

Receipt Hog: buk46797

Shopkick referral code: MALL751055

10) Reviews! My books need reviews. If you read and enjoyed, leave one. Leave enough and Amazon sends me a unicorn and saddle. As Angelia Sparrow and as Nick Rowan

11) BPAL. I will try your unloved imps and either send them on or enjoy them. Masculine scents particularly welcome. Highwayman, Old Scratch and The Bow and Crown of Conquest are favorites, as are the Ars Draconis series.

12) Crafting material, needs not be new. Yarn (skeins or balls), hooks, needles and patterns for it. A knitting machine is my dream, but very expensive. Beads, wire. Metal stamping jewelry items. Tie-Dyes that just didn't get used. Cloth, cotton only. I'll make masks of it. A full sized sewing machine

13) Striped knee-high socks are never the wrong answer. I adore them. Zany socks of any kind are welcome, although I prefer crew and knee length to anklets.

NickRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02373234360361399832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462173375599864041.post-88681335982801104442021-12-31T21:33:00.002-08:002021-12-31T21:39:48.359-08:00Year End Wrap-up
Work: I kept driving a school bus.

Marriage: still with Mudd, still with Gabriel. Separated from Cat as I do not like the person I become when around her for extended periods.

Kids: Bun is Assistant manager at a Chinese restaurant. Chris is in grad school. Ollie is finishing her associates, and has to have a second major to keep her scholarship, because her bachelor program doesn't start until fall. Jon is still trying for the Army. He has a couple of health issues that are holding him up. His scoliosis is within tolerances, but they ware waiting to hear about the cholesteatoma removal.

Grandkids: Hunter is a big six year old first grader. Alexander turned 2. Alexander discovered how to walk this year, and took off. He also opened his first soda by bashing it on the corner of the table and shotgunning it.

Church: Kithaka Dun went off brilliantly. Chris made a great leader for the Wild Hunt and my eldering was lovely. Festival of Souls went very well, even if we walked a broken labyrinth this year. I am veiling for the dark season. And maybe year round. Hecate laid her claim to me, as crone and witch. I did a reading of one of Mama Dragon's stories at community Yule

We got the heat and air repaired and a new water heater and the front bath remodeled.
That makes a world of difference.
I started a TikTok and an OnlyFans.

Cats: We lost Tribble (age 15) this year. Buttercup (also gone) gave us 5 kittens in May, 3 orange boys and 2 calico girls. When she moved out only Luke (missing a paw) and Squish stayed. Leia the dark calico (my brave girl: first to walk, first to open her eyes, first to escape the kitten box, first to litter train) treats us like a bed and breakfast. She will sleep on our bed, but not allow us to pet her.

I read 38 books, 24 of them new to me. American Gods was a rambly beast, but worth it. I enjoyed 11 books of John Hartness' Quincy Harker Demon Hunter series

I saw 56 movies, 20 of them new to me. I think The Invisible Man was the best of them, with Looper a close second.

I performed in 4 drag shows and had a blast doing it.

Writing: We finished Master Anton. I wrote a short story and a cookbooklet.

Crafting: I made at least 2 dozen hats this year, 15 pouches and almost finished a lotus duster for me. The money quote:
"More than half of the surveyed Trump voters — approximately 52% — said the "situation is such that I would favor [Blue/Red] states seceding from the union to form their own separate country." Approximately 41% of Biden-voting respondents answered similarly."
Irony that those most in favor of making kids say the Pledge of Allegiance are the ones who don't believe in the Indivisible part. It's the 41% of Biden voters that is new and kind of scary in this poll.
I can't say they are wrong. Let the half that want to move into the future go do so, and let those who want a libertarian theocracy have it.
(FTR: I dropped the word "indivisible" when saying the Pledge of Allegiance decades ago.)

Democrap

We are not even human.
We are demons to be banished.
We are rats to be killed.
We are shit to be scraped off the shoes of True White Christian Americans.
This is RTLM all over again, calling the Tutsis cockroaches and snakes.
Vermin to be exterminated

I was tempted to post a picture of my family and demand to know which one they thought they should kill first? The pansexual school teacher? The trans school teacher? The bisexual medical coder? The asexual youtuber? The interracially married disabled vet? The queer and trans driver?

I did not.

Now, Tennessee has passed a law. This sign must be displayed by stores that have potty parity

A warning sign. That they might use the restroom.

We are so dangerous we merit a warning sign
And laws to let medical personnel not treat us

And laws to keep us out of sports.

Things are getting ugly, and will only get worse. This state level stuff is retaliation. And the mindset that non-conservatives are vermin is just getting stronger.

We had a dress rehearsal for fascism. Now, we either pull ourselves out of it, and work on that more perfect union with liberty and justice for all, or we plunge headlong in.

I'm not sure which way we're going. But I'm taking big breaths, just in case.

NickRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02373234360361399832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462173375599864041.post-48402842691800383442021-01-14T16:18:00.001-08:002021-01-14T16:18:31.700-08:00Fear and frustration
I have watched the events of the last week/month/four years/forty years closely. I've seen it all unfurl like a big rancid picnic. I am embarrassed by the small corner I helped spread years ago.

And while I see where we are going, and have a general notion how this will all play out, I am simultaneously enough of a sociopath to be frustrated that the Fascists Are Doing It Stupidly.

The Republicans are too old for the most part to learn the "Learn the language of your enemy and turn it against him" technique that is becoming popular in Pick-up artist circles.

Let's take the big ones:

Climate change.
A republican candidate comes out saying "Climate changer is real. It is happening. I have answers!" These answers are of course structured to increase profits for solar and certain auto makers. Cities are redlined and solar comes with subsidies and assistance in certain neighborhoods (read that white and middle class or higher), while older generating plants are put on austerity measures, and only deliver electricity 4-5 days a week.
The electric cars and hybrids are given subsidies and made popular, while older gas-burning cars are taxed more heavily, as is gasoline. "After all, transportation is one of our largest polluters." Public transportation is not improved, and may in fact be eliminated. Work will become an impossibility for millions of people, freeing up jobs.

Nothing is ever done about the companies who cause infinitely more waste than individuals, deforestation continues, the oceans keep heating up and the growing zones keep moving. And the poor people who can't afford solar or an electric car are shamed and blamed.

Water starts to come under austerity measures. There's plenty for fountains and golf courses but city water is limited to a trickle. Lawns are ticketed for being brown when people have barely enough to drink and wash with. Bottled water companies make record profits. Since not having water and electricity is considered environmental neglect, children can be removed from homes and quietly distributed to work as domestics to wealthy households.

Profit all around, and a reduction in poor people, especially people of color.

Abortion:

"I can reduce abortion by 40%! Let's not ban it, women will always need it for emergency situations. But I can reduce the unwed pregnancy by 50% and abortions by 40% It's been tested and proven."

Long term contraceptives: implants and IUDs, even sterilization are made easier to get, free of charge on the state's dime. IUDs are especially encouraged.

Since work is becoming impossible and water and electric are unpredictable, many people opt for the IUD. Many opt for tubals, since they are no longer forced to be 30+ and have spousal permission.
The abortion rate drops as promised.

But, while there is money for inserting IUDs, there was never money allocated for removal 5 years down the road...

Fewer abortions. And a reduction in poor people especially people of color.

There are other social issues where a republican could stand up and say "Hey, let's BE fiscally conservative, try this in a way that has been shown to save money, and oh yeah, we can make it hurt the right people too."
NickRowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02373234360361399832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462173375599864041.post-87416133607186626892021-01-08T22:20:00.002-08:002021-01-08T22:21:22.043-08:00My theories on the Capitol
On January 6, armed protestors stormed the US capitol. There is some evidence they were let in deliberately. And more that they had maps (see visiting hard to find private offices instead of labeled public offices)

And I am with Slate on the idea that there are three groups of people in this scenario.
1) The ones on a data mission who stole laptops
2) The ones on a tactical mission to take (and possibly execute) hostages https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/01/was-there-a-plan-for-hostages-or-killings-at-the-capitol.html
3) The cosplatriot/Weekend warriors trying to bring down The Storm, the day Trump would rise up and execute all the traitors. https://www.businessinsider.com/qanon-trump-capitol-attack-belief-precursor-the-storm-2021-1 They are probably the ones who erected the gallows, but whether for the mannequins or actual people is hard to say

Let's talk about 3, because these are the ones getting all the press time.

It's easy to laugh at them in their special T shirts, and their lack of masking and their general clumsiness. After all, don't these idiots know that feces contains DNA? And tracking it leaves shoe prints? Both of these are evidence as any even casual watcher of police procedurals knows.
Don't they know about surveillance and covering their faces?

So here are these barefaced people, some in highly identifiable clothing. How do they think they will get away with this?

The answer of course is that they thought they were going to win. Like their predecessors, they thought they could "lick the yankees with corn stalks." And just like the old confederates, these new one found that the yankees didn't fight that way.

But they were never the real operation.

Two laptops, those of Pelosi and Merkley, and Clyburn's Ipad were all stolen. It was Shadow-Work and Ethics and various paths, as we came to understand ourselves and our path better. At times it felt like Group Therapy. And it was in a way. I ended up re-integrating my Shadow this summer. He's still a nuisance.

My Florida Trip was postponed in March, so Gabriel and I went in November. We had a lovely vacation and I want to go back when they have the monorail repairs done and the train running again.

I collected grandbaby pictures like they were rare baseball cards. I got to watch the boys open presents over Skype.

My baby girl got legally married. She'd been handfasted, but they signed the license. My oldest called her wedding off, broke up with the guy and moved to Texas.

I rearranged my Altar.

We made a stab at cleaning the house, and I found the front room. I finally have almost enough bookcases.

We got a new roof put on.

I read 26 adult books, watched 56 movies and recorded 14 stories for my grandsons.
The best movies I saw this year were Three Days of the Condor and The Conversation.
The worst ones I saw were Annie Hall, Teen Spirit and It Comes At Night. All tedious, the first two weren't funny enough for what they were, and the last wasn't scary enough for what it tried to be.

The best book I read was Stephen King's On Writing.
The worst was Pawn of Prophecy. Cliche upon endless cliche and I could see all the story beats coming pages away.

I wrote a cookbook, and a couple of short stories.
I made shawls and a doily and arm warmers and hats and hotpads.
I took the recorder back up.

It was a strange and difficult year. And Disney is scrupulous about its masks and social distancing. So we went.

The only way this trip could have been gayer was if we'd worn glitter, high heels and feather boas.

Sunday, Gabriel and I drove from Memphis to Orlando. 800+ miles. Gabriel drove most of it. My legs were giving me trouble. I suspect I used up 3 months worth of cortisone in 2 weeks.
But we got there, and my scooter was awaiting us in the lobby.
The Days Inn on Polynesian Isle Blvd is a 2 star motel. It had working plumbing, a fridge and microwave, a good pool, was reasonably clean and the beds were free of vermin. That's pretty much what I ask, especially for $30/night. The Wifi was good on my phone, but Gabriel never did get his computer hooked in,
We moved in and I had a nice hot soak.
The water was over chlorinated. I cleaned the brita pitcher, filled our brita bottle, and made tea for chilling.
I bought our bus tickets and we checked our magic bands.
Then we set the alarms and crashed

Monday, we realized my phone had not changed over to Eastern Time.
So we dressed, ate some sausage and cheese balls and packed our snack bag.
I fired up the scooter and we headed to the bus stop a block away. (most convenient) Rather than the $25/day Disney parking, and fighting traffic, we rode in comfort for $8/day.
Then came the first hitch. Buses ran to Animal Kingdom and Hollywood and Epcot from the Polynesian resort, about 3/4 of a mile away. We were already overheated and tired when we caught the bus.
So it was through a second temperature screen and a second bag check. (About 5-10 minutes all told)
And we were in.

We hiked to the back of the park and caught the Kilimanjaro Safari.

Our driver Axel was pleasant to listen to, knowledgeable and a good driver. But then the ride started and it was ALL worth it, line, squashing and everything. Best 4 minutes of Gabriel's life.

We hiked out, my scooter battery dying by inches. Then a bus to the Poly and the long walk to Ticket and Transportation. We caught the 56 bus and went home. I soaked and we giggled about the day. I made sure the phone was on Eastern time.

Tuesday was Magic Kingdom. This was much easier. We took the Ferry Boat and strolled a lot. We checked in with Disability services and got registered.

Breakfast was Starbucks on Main Street USA
Thoth sent us a messenger.

Then it was off to Fantasyland.
We rode Peter Pan's Flight, which was better than the Youtube videos because it was darker.
Small World was a walk on (almost, maybe a 5 minute wait), so we walked. Gabriel gawked saying he didn't know there were this many animatronics ever.
Goofy's barnstormer was a fun little roller coaster and we laughed our heads off on the tea cups, which were about 30 second too short.

In Tomorrowland, we got a return time for Space Mountain, had some water and a pepper jack stuffed pretzel, and waited.
Space mountain has you transfer from scooter to wheelchair. There were a lot of ramps. Gabriel was having trouble on a downslope so I said I had it and he should let go. He did and I barreled to the bottom yelling "Banzai! Coming Through, Gravity Works!" There was no one between me and the bottom but the teens on the other side of the rail looked worried at the crazy lady in rainbow mouse-ears.

I still hate Space Mountain. I screamed all the way through, getting shrill and panicky toward the end. Gabriel cackled in my ear like a mad scientist whose death ray just tested out lethal.

We went for a smoke so I could calm down. We signed up for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom but didn't play. Next time. There was a parade, and Santa looked down from the float and waved and announced "I like your ears," to us. Made Gabriel's day.

Pirates of the Caribbean was not what I remember, but I loved it. Gabriel bought a hat for Rowan, and didn't get a bag. I ended up wearing it,

We went for lunch at Pecos Bill's. I had the nachos. It was good but unremarkable. I chickened out on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, so we got a return time for the Haunted Mansion. We made a visit to Memento Mori, and I got a Madame Leota key chain.. I loved it, even if we did miss the portrait room by taking the disability entrance. Gabriel was meh. But he was overheated and tired by then and was expecting something rather ghastlier.

Bert there flirted with Gabriel. We played the game on Play Disney Parks. GAbriel is now a Major in the Resistance.
We flew the Millennium Falcon. SQUEE! I stepped into the cockpit and promptly thumped the area over the entrance. It was one party per unit, so we piloted. We were pretty dreadful at it. But when we made the jump to light speed, I knew I was living one of the best moments of my life.

We had lunch at Docking Bay 7: Felucian garden platter (plant based meatballs and hummus), smoked kaadu ribs with slaw and a muffin and a Baatu-bon. It was all really excellent. The plant meatballs were tasty. The smoked ribs were an experience. The slaw was red cabbage with a vinegar base and with the rub was a superbly satisfying pair. The baatu-bon was chocolate cake with a coffee custard and purple vanilla coating. Very good. Not sure what the green and yellow are but they added to things tremendously.

We shopped and I got my Spira. It was a bit of a walk. The Imperials were surprisingly careful of me in my scooter. "You are all under arrest for interrogation. Those who can walk on their own first. You on the transport, follow." I was pulling the "Cocky spacer" routine as much as I could while on a scooter. "Yeah, birthday in an interrogation chamber, probably not the most fun way to spend it." The lieutenant said "If you'd been that wise to start with you wouldn't be." I gave him the one sided smile,"Things are tough all over for the independent businessman."
The ride was awesome and terrifying. Gabriel had a moment at the end when he realized "Oh crap, this is an escape pod." That's when it launched. I screamed a little.

We came down, giddy as thunder.

Gabriel went shopping and I caught the conference call with my family.
