Encountering problems in loved material

Sometimes, growing up is just no fun at all.

I have been re-engaging with two book series I loved in my teens. (yes, we had writing then, smartmouth. We had left pictograms behind around the time I hit double digits) And both are bothering me a lot.

I've listed to the audiobooks for Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars series. It's been about three years since I last visited the red planet. And I am reading Julian May's Milieu and Pliocene series in order, which I have never done. I've read them all repeatedly, but never in order.

Let's start with Burroughs. I have fought my way from frozen south pole to frozen north pole beside Captain John Carter of Virginia scores of times. But this time... I am disappointed. I didn't remember Dejah Thoris being so much of an object. Kidnapped here, carried off there, desired by everyone but with almost no agency of her own. I don't think she says ANYTHING in Warlord of Mars, except her husband's name.
Carter is obsessed with his wife, with getting her back. It colors every page and feels more stalkery and possessive than loving. Everyone else is obsessed with her too.

Burroughs can write interesting female characters. Sola, the only green martian who has known love in a thousand generations. Thuvia, who can command the martian lions. Jealous, spoiled Phaidor, who redeems herself. Valla Dia, who finds herself trapped in the body of an elderly queen instead of her own beautiful shape, and Xaxa, the wicked queen who is willing to buy youth and beauty to continue ruling her people with an iron hand. Dejah Thoris is not interesting after the first book. I liked the movie version better.

The racism, as would be expected for books a hundred years old, is nearly painful. Anti-Native American sentiment. The blacks stereotyped as warriors and brutal ones. The cannibalism, I can almost write off as both black and white martians do it, feeding on the lower orders of human as humans feed on animals. The yellow men of the north pole, with their fierce black beards, are steeped in decadence and orientalism, including fiendish tortures. Although they are not the only race to practice it, the torture somehow becomes part of the general orientalism.

I am unsure I want to continue.

Julian May did her work in the 80s and 90s. Coming back to it thirty years later... and yeah, it has a lot of problems. I'm four books into the nine. Eleazer Wheelock for one.

The song used to be a Dartmouth staple and is no longer sung because it is racist as are the dining hall murals (shown in the video)

Yet, May has Dartmouth alums singing it into the mid 21st century, seeming unnoticing.

The whole idea of Ethnic Planets seems really awkward. I thought it sounded cool before. Hey, go emigrate to the Irish planet of Hibernia, raise sheep, spin, weave and dye, play the bodhran and sing the old songs, eating soda bread and coddle and swilling Guinness. I could do that.

but these days, that feels very isolationist and a little racist.

Too the planets are so...white.
The Africans have to petition for more planets. their primary psychic groups were wiped out, and the Milieu wants colonists who are psychic. Ditto the Chinese. (and if the celtic genes are such hot stuff psychically, why do the Irish only have one planet)

This is by no means complete, since there are 784 human planets. But, in addition to the cosmop worlds, the planet wiki lists:
Canadian
French (4)
American (5), one an Alaskan planet
Russian (2)
Japanese (3)
African (2)
Scottish (2)
Laplander
German
Irish
British (2)
New Zealand
Brazilian
India
Albanian (yet Lithuanians didn't have enough "ethnic dynamism.")
Polynesian

It's going to continue to be interesting and a little difficult.

I still want my Dalriada Wind Surfer Racing Team tshirt though...

Overheard tonight

It was a productive writing session.

*ting ting ting of falling garden weasel* Cirrus, you ninny, you almost got mulched.

"They're moving on killing all the black people."
"Perkins isn't there to put it off."
"What the fuck are you two writing?!"
"Porn."

"Who's the guy in the CS?"
"John Hill."
"Ever meet a fellow by the name of Hill?"
"You're fired."

A: "Logan is office furniture."
B: "I think [Actor] would make very cute office furniture."
A: "[Actor] blowing [Other actor] under the desk."
C: You have my attention.
D&E: All of our attention
B: And I'm just having The Pretty...
A: Your turn.
B: Shhh. Pretty.
A: James is in Italy. Logan is offering to David.
C: [Actor] and [David's Actor]?
B: Shhh. Pretty. Think that shot from Numbers.

"Did we just Italian Job our main character?"
"Yep."

(Flipping through photo folder)
"That's hot. Who is it?"
"Me. Thirty years ago."
"WHOA!"
"Told you I was skinny once."

February round up and planning for March

So here we are, 1/6 of the way through the year.

February:
Movies watched, 9 for the year:
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure--entertaining
Wanted--a fast thrill ride and I love James McAvoy
Galaxy Quest--always a good call
Alvin and the Chipmunks--entertaining, I asked little of this
Austin Powers: The Spy who shagged me--dreadful, absolutely dreadful

Books read, 8 for the year:
World War Z--this is a master class in character creation, arc plotting and voice
Wild Hunt--my own for editing purposes
Red as Blood--Still a classic. Hit the tropes before they were cliches
The Two Towers--Tolkien can go ON. This suffers from Middle Book-itis and drags.

Gym attended: 9 days (out of 20, boo)
Fitness goals: 5 miles on bicycle in 30 minutes, 1.5 miles on treadmill in 30 minutes, 15 minutes on elliptical. Met, if painfully.

Writing: some added to Mystery of the Monkey God. "A Fool's Taj Mahal" finished for Patreon

March:

Gym: attend 17 days (all I work)
20 minutes on elliptical
1.75 miles in 30 minutes
7 miles in 30 minutes
increase reps on all weights up to 50.

The Intervention
The Metaconcert
Jack the Bodiless
Diamond Mask
The Return of the King

Movies:

Add 10K more to Mystery of the Monkey God, take it to 33K

Nearly a month

February has been exhausting.

I'm on a three-tier run. My bus pulls out at 5:55 for a high school run. Then junior high and then elementary. I clock out at 9:20, and back in at 1:20 and work until 5:15.

I didn't meet my gym attendance goal. But, I may have met my fitness goals. This week is the testing.

We got Jon a car so he can job hunt and go to school. The payment and insurance aren't awful. It's a 2014 Focus, with about 100K on it.

Olivia cut my hair today. It looks very good. This is the first time I've seen Nick looking back from the mirror rather than something in-betweenish

Oli and I started the garden today, since the waxing Moon was in Cancer. It moves into fiery Leo until the Full on the First and that's not good for much of anything. And not much should be planted on a Full Moon, even a Virgo full.
We have
Ancho peppers
Cucumbers
tomatoes
cauliflower
broccol
zucchini
pumpkin
watermelon
acorn squash
chives
parsley
basil

Some of the rest--lettuces, spinach--has to be sown straight into the dirt.

Otherwise, it's been work work work.

Planning for this week:
Monday:
work
gym: bicycle, 5 miles in 30 minutes or less.
finish short story
work
Stroganoff for dinner
pack lunch

Tuesday:
work
gym: elliptical, 15 minutes
work on scarf
work
fish and chips for dinner
pack lunch

Wednesday:
work
gym: treadmill, 1.5 miles in less than 30 minutes
finish scarf

Thursday:

Announce scarf winner, post March Patreon stuff

Friday:

Pagan: Spell for the Full Blood Moon

This is for my household. Make adjustments in deities as you see fit.

Pre rit meditation:
Think seriously about the job you want.

Cast circle:
The year wheel goes round and so do we
Mother comes round, and so do we
All around and around
and round about,
power within
doubt without.

Call Quarters:

Hail, Spirits of the East and Air.
Rulers of mind and intellect, join us for this rite
Sharpen our wits and skills,
For we must know what to do and how to do it
hail and welcome

Hail, Spirits of the South and Fire
Rulers of passion and desire, join us for this rite
Inflame our needs and spark our passions
For talent and skill without passion are soulless
hail and welcome

Hail, Spirits of the West and Water.
Rulers of emotion and creativity, join us for this rite
Let our feelings and abilities flow
For without these, skill and passion turn out nothing
hail and welcome

Hail, Spirits of the North and Earth
Rulers of strength and stability, join us for this rite
Ground us in our reality and give us power to carry forth
For we must have the ability to DO our will.
hail and welcome

Tonight is the Full Moon in Leo, the Blood moon and a blue moon. This hasn’t happened since 1861.
Creativity, performance and power are all at their peak. So we draw on that. Tonight is about will. About doing what we will, about knowing our will and making it manifest, with some outside aid.

Light green candle
Thoth, lord of writing, lord of story, lord of the Moon,
grant us your gifts this night
To you belongs contentment, Thoth who overwhelms the earth with beauty

Light blue candle
Khnum, lord of all that is made,
aid us with our poor skills,
for the lord of the wheel is our father also.

Light gold candle
Swift Hermes, lord of travel and writing and commerce,
who give us songs and an open road,
join us with your gifts.

Light black candle
All-father Odin, who sees the wyrds of mortals,
Whsiperer of secrets who set Mani on his silver course in the night
join us with your wisdom.

Light white candle
Arianrhod, lady of the silver wheel,
from whom all come and to whom all return
We stand beneath your light, join us with your power

Tonight, we are here to work. We have work. We need work. Right now, you get to do work.

Your preparatory meditation was on the job you desire.
Now, shut your eyes. Relax. Think of that job, only of that job.
Think of applying, of sending your resume with the skills well highlighted, so that it leaps out at them.
Think of interviewing. See the interviewer. Make eye contact. Feel the handshake.
Think of getting the job, and doing intake paperwork. See the I9, the W4, the direct deposit paperwork.
Think of working at the job. See yourself carryng out the tasks, seeing others, doing the work.
Think of seeing the paystub in your hands.

Now, listen to me, you have a fire within you. Deep in you it burns.
The Gotterfunken, the spark of the gods within us.
I want you to see your fire.
It may look like a bonfire or an Olympic flame or any sort of fire.
The important thing is that it is your fire.
But see it.
Observe it.
And when you are ready, step into the middle of it.
The fire will not hurt you. It licks over your skin with a pleasant sensation.
Stand there. Let the fire rise back up, higher, higher, until it is over your head.
Open your eyes and your mouth. Breathe in and let the fire enter you.
Let it fill you.
Now it begins to burn, but the pain is not unendurable.
Breathe it out.
See the things that came with it. See your doubts, your fears. See your bad habits and other things.
Let the fire burn those away.
There they go, charred cinders up in smoke
Breathe the fire in again, let it wash through you and over you.
It purifies you, and makes you what you should become.
When you are ready, step out of the fire and into the patch of moonlight at your feet.
You’ve burned yourself clean.
Now let the Moon fill you up. Whether god or goddess, lord or lady, let this, a once-in-a-lifetime event, fill you.
I see the moon
the moon sees me
gods bless the moon-
and gods bless me. (3 times)
Come back slowly.

You have all the tools you need. You know what you need to know.
Your gods are with you.
Go and find work.

Lords and Lady, of your grace,
we thank you for your aid and love.
Guide us in the days to come as we use what we have done here tonight.
Lords and lady, you who hold both the moon and work together in your hands, you have aided us many times before, we thank you for your presence tonight. We are grateful for the gifts you have given us.. Bless us, bless the work of our hands and days.
Go if you must, stay if you will.
Hail and farewell

Spirits of the North,
we thank you for the stability and strength,
hail and farewell

Spirits of the West,
we thank you for the cereativity and emotion,
hail and farewell

Spirits of the south,
we thank you for the passion and desire,
hail and farewell

Spirits of the east,
we thank you for the wit and skills,
hail and farewell
